MARLENE NEUMANN – PHILANTHROPIST
Since she was a little girl Marlene’s natural impulse was to rescue animals and help others in need. Marlene’s path is one of service… counsellor, fund raiser, event co-ordinator, documentary photographer for NGOs, photojournalist…Marlene’s career and charity work has seen her involvement in: ELSPCA, Lifeline, Meals on Wheels, Pet Pals, Cotlands, St Bernard’s Hospice, EL Animal Welfare, Rotary, Animal anti-cruelty league, Phelophepa health train, Small Projects Foundation, F.A.C.E. Donkey project … to name a few!
BUCKAROO INITIATIVE
At the core of Marlene’s heart is her deep love for animals. While adopting a rescue dog from her local SPCA, Marlene witnessed the sad plight of the dogs in tiny run down kennels. Marlene had a dream to start an initiative of her own to help the dogs. She began the BUCKAROO CAMPAIGN..based on give a rand, give a buck. The project enlarged all the kennels, built two dog runs, employed a full-time dog walker and landscaped the gardens. Businesses, an army of animal lovers and over 8000 school children supported Buckaroo in building, donations, collections, events, gardening and volunteering.
BUCKAROO STERILISATION DRIVE
Marlene and her Buckaroo Team are now raising funds for a sterilisation drive in informal settlements in and around East London. This past year the project has sterilised hundreds of dogs funded by Buckaroo with the help of the ELSPCA. “I believe if we can slow the birth rate down the local shelters will feel the relief in years to come.”
The huge numbers of strays puts a great amount of strain on animal shelters who are already buckling under the pressure to assist animals in need.
